HOW TO PREPARE YOUR POND FOR WINTER SEASON IN BALTIMORE, MD.

Some of you like to leave your pond up and running during the winter months so you can enjoy the amazing ice formations, but most of you will prefer to close your pond. In order to enjoy your pond at its maximum level during spring, you might want to follow these tips.

DRAIN WATER OUT

Take care of your pipes! As water freezes inside of them, it expands and could crack your pipes. So, don’t forget to drain the water out of your pipes before temperatures drop.

TAKE CARE OF YOUR PUMP

Protecting your pump from the cold will extend its life. To maintain the life of the seals on your pump, store it in a bucket of water in a frost free area of your house.

OXYGENATE THE WATER

On some ponds we install pond aerators to oxygenate. This helps all biological processes and creating a more stable environment, resulting in healthier fish and plants. Aeration is very important during winter months in colder climates, as it helps to keep a small hole open in the surface of the pond to aid in degassing. Another option is a recirculating bubbler pump designed to sit in the pond and oxygenate the water. The adjustable discharge pipe on the pump should be located just below the surface of the water. The flow from the pump will bubble at the surface of the pond and maintain an opening in the ice.
