How to Keep Pond Water Clean | 6 Tips | Baltimore area pond companies | Maryland Backyard Ponds

How do I keep my pond water clean?

I’m asked this question a lot!  Many pond owners around the Baltimore area have struggled with this problem in their ponds for years.  Here are the most common solutions we have found while serving homeowners in the Maryland area.

1. Don’t feed your fish too much

When you feed fish more than they want to eat, the excess food is left to fall into the bottom of the pond. In the Baltimore area here is the general guideline:  It’s best not to feed your fish more than 1 time per day  Only feed them what they can eat in about 4 minutes.  If there is food left over in the pond when they are done eating, reduce the amount of food.  This will make a huge difference!

2. Have enough plants in your pond

In the Maryland area it’s best to have about 40% to 50% of the surface area of your pond either covered or shaded by plants.

3. Don’t have too many fish

As a general rule of thumb, if you have more than 8” – 10″ of fish for every 100 gallons of water, your pond is likely going to have a hard time keeping up with the fish waste load. Excessive waste can cause problems in your pond water. It’s best to think about finding some of your fish a new home if your pond is overpopulated.

4. Have enough circulation.

At a minimum it’s ideal to be circulating your entire pond’s water volume one time every hour. Maintaining your pump will ensure that the flow isn’t restricted by anything stuck to the intake.

5.  Filter your pond

We have had very good results by erring on the side of up-sizing your filter so that it can handle more than the capacity of your pond.  It’s also very important to maintain your filter properly.

6. Clean any leaves or debris from pond.

When debris have a chance to settle into the bottom of your pond, it’s not good. In the bottom of the pond they team up with fish waste and leftover fish food making a big mess!  This can cause ammonia levels to raise in your pond and endanger your fish. Proper cleaning of your pond is essential.  Also, it’s a great idea to add beneficial bacteria which can actually help keep your pond water healthy and clean.
