How to care for your pond in the Summer | Baltimore pond blog | MD pond info | Pond companies in the Baltimore area

It’s no secret that the Baltimore area gets hot in the summer.  If you live in the Maryland area and have a pond this summer, you want to make sure your backyard pond is healthy throughout the warmer months.

It’s important to keep a few things in mind when your pond water temp rises above 80 degrees.  

First things first: 

Here are a few things to do that can help prevent your your pond from becoming a unhealthy mess.

#1 Plants.  Plenty of plants will provide shade for the fish. A good rule of thumb is to provide plant coverage of approximately 1/3 of the water surface area.

#2 Circulation.  Ideally you’ll want to place your filtration in a way so that your pond receives optimal circulation.

What about my fish? 

Keep a close eye on your fish. Do they look stressed out?  Are they gasping for air at the pond surface? 

Warmer summer pond water and increased fish activity increase the need for oxygen at a time when less oxygen is available.  Stressed fish sometimes begin to develop diseases.

It’s a great idea to add oxygen to your Baltimore pond.   You can do this by installing an aerator.  You could also install a fountain with a pump. 

Two more things: 

• Feed your fish in the morning and be careful not to feed them too much. 
• Remove leaves and debris from the pond surface before they decay in the warmer water.
