How many gallons of water are in my pond | Baltimore County Pond info | Maryland Pond Companies
How many gallons of water are in my pond? This is a common question we get asked by pond owners around the Baltimore area. In this article we will tell you how to calculate this no matter what type of pond you have.
You may be wondering why you even need to know how much water your pond holds. Does it really matter if you know your pond surface area? Many pond products used by MD pond owners are applied to the pond based on the number of gallons you are treating. This is especially important when adding products to combat algae. Other products require an estimate of the pond’s surface area for proper application. Additionally, knowing how many gallons of water are in your pond can also help you determine how many fish your pond can sustain.
How to measure your pond.
Ponds that are shaped as simple circles and rectangles are the easiest to measure, the more irregular the shape, the more difficult and less accurate our measurements become.
Length x Width x Height
This is the basic formula to find the cubic feet of pond volume.
There are a few things to consider when using this formula to figure out how many gallons of water are in your pond.
If the depth of your pond is consistent it’s easy. What happens if there are shelves or steps in your pond of different depths? This is a common feature of ponds around the Baltimore area. I would recommend that you measure the maximum depth and cut it in half to create an average depth. Let’s say the pond is 3 feet at its deepest point but has some shallow areas for plants. I would use half of that depth, 1.5 feet in our calculations. This is not an exact science and sometimes the depth number needs to be adjusted. The same holds true for the length and width of the pond if it’s an irregular shape. It’s best to average out these measurements.
How many gallons of water are in my pond?
First, use the same formula as above to find out the cubic feet in your pond. Length x Width x Height
A cubic foot can hold 7.48 gallons of water. Simply multiply the cubic feet x 7.48 to get the gallons of water in your pond. If you happen to have a stream or a waterfall flowing into your pond , you also need to allow for extra water that’s in circulation.
If your pond is round in shape, use the formula Surface Area = Pi x R² Simply put, Surface Area = 3.14 times radius times radius.
Here is an example calculation:
Let’s say you’re a Maryland homeowner with a pond that’s rectangular 10′ wide X 15′ long x 3′ deep
10′ x 15′ is 150 sq ft. Multiply by the average depth 150 sq st x 1.75′ = 262.5 cubic feet of water.
Next, multiply the cubic feet of water 262.5 x 7.48 = 1,963 gallons of water.
I hope this helps answer the question: How many gallons of water are in my pond?
