Pond Spring Maintenance | 9 Tips for Baltimore Homeowners | Maryland Pond Company

Pond Spring Maintenance | 9 Tips for Baltimore Homeowners | Maryland Pond Company

Spring is here in Baltimore, MD and it’s time to take care of your pond. These maintenance tasks can help prevent major future problems from arising throughout the Maryland pond season.  It’s also a great time to make improvements to your pond that can dramatically make your life easier.

Here are the top 9 spring pond tips for Baltimore area homeowners:

1. Clean out your pond.  Whether you need a full cleanout or just a partial cleaning service , it’s important to take care of your pond in the spring. 2. Check your pond pump to make sure that it’s clear and functioning correctly. Your pump is the heart of your pond in Baltimore and needs to be in top condition at all times. Click below to learn how to fix a broken pond pump.  How do I fix my pond pump motor?

3.  Inspect and clean your pond lighting.  Make sure that all of your pond lights are functioning correctly.  This is also a great time to clean the lenses so they shine their brightest.  If you don’t have lights (or enough lights) in your Maryland pond this is a great time to consider adding them.  Check out this article about LED pond lighting:

4. Fix any leaks in your waterfall or pond. Constantly adding public water or well water to make up for a loss of pond water means the constant addition of nutrients which will eventually promote algae growth in Maryland ponds.  Need help finding a leak in your Baltimore pond?

5. Start adding beneficial bacteria pond water treatments.   In the Baltimore, MD area it’s important to continue to do so regularly throughout the season. It’s also important to choose the correct water treatments for your water feature or pond.

6. Be careful not overfeed your fish. Fish food that is not eaten will add more nutrients to the pond, helping feed the algae. Fish food that is not eaten is like Algae super fuel!

7. Remove string algae, other organic debris left from last season. This is a crucial step for Baltimore area pond owners because an excess of decaying debris (YUCK!) will add to the nutrient levels and the algae in the pond.

8. Plants to control algae.   The correct pond plants directly fight with algae for nutrients, they are one of the most important things you can add to your pond in Baltimore or Harford County. Using a nice variety of plants will not only add beauty to your pond, but will help reduce algae as well.

9. My favorite tip is to enjoy your pond this spring!  Spruce it up with new lights, add a fountain within your feature, add tropical plants or just change up some of the landscaping around your pond!  I’m always changing things around my pond and it’s one of the best parts of owning a pond!  Get creative and HAVE FUN!
