How to find a leak in my pond in Baltimore, MD
Having some water loss in your pond or water feature is normal due to splashing or evaporation, but if you are losing several inches in a day, then you have a water leak to solve.
So let’s answer the question: How to find a leak in my pond in Baltimore, MD
Here are some steps to follow to locate the leak:
First, fill your pond and turn off your pump and anything else that circulates water outside of the pond. If the water level continues to drop, then the leak might be in the pond itself. If the water level stays the same, the leak is not in the main pond.
If it has not rained for a few days, check the surroundings for a wet spot, and if you find one, you are possibly close to the source of the leak.
Leave the pump off and allow the pond to continue to leak until it stops. If it does not stop before it reaches a level dangerous to fish and plants, you will need to temporarily remove them from the pond. While the water level is dropping check around the edges to make sure that the pond liner has not sunken down or rocks have not been displaced causing water to leak over the edge.
When the water reaches a point where it is no longer dropping, wait 24 hours to make sure the water level has stabilized. Then you have to closely inspect the pond liner all along the stabilized water level to find the source of your leak. You should be looking for any irregularity in the pond liner from a large gash or a tiny pinhole. This can be an extremely tedious process, especially if the pond liner is covered with algae and grime.
